What book-club-worthy books do you recommend?

Author: admin  //  Category: book club suggestions

I had a similar question posted earlier- but I am new to this I closed it out too early- I would like more suggestions! Thanks to those who answerd though, they were all good suggestions.
I am looking for suggestions for my book club- our favorites have been ‘The Kite Runner,’ ‘Memoirs of a Geisha,’ ‘How to be Lost,’ ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring,’ ‘Night,’ ‘The Memory Keeper’s Daughter’, and several other Target book club picks! We are a group of 20 and 30 something women, many teachers. Any ideas of what we’d like? Considering our favorites, do you think we would like ‘Saving fish from drowning’ by Amy Tan? Thanks!

Suite Francais can’t remember the artist. It’s non fiction though.
The Alchemist, short read by Paulo Coehlo
Snow by Orhan Pamuk, Nobel prize in Lit.
There is an apple in my freezer, non fiction memoir set in WW II
The bell jar, Sylvia Plathe

HELP!! Question about online book clubs/ book swaps!!?

Author: admin  //  Category: book clubs online

Hi there, I’m looking for a good online book club or book swap. I excitedly signed up and listed all my books on "paperbackswap.com" only to find out it’s strictly for US residents only! Grrrr…..Are there any good ones mainly for Canadians? It doesn’t have to be strictly for Canadians because I would love to swap with US residents as well. Please help by listing any of the ones you know or have heard of. Thank you in advance. ;)

You might investigate Bookcrossing.com. Although they are not strictly a swap site, individuals might swap with you. Look through the message boards and check out the profiles…it’s a great site!

Do you like books featured on Oprah’s book club?

Author: admin  //  Category: book club lists

I have read a few books that she picked for her club and I have to say I was quite disappointed, save for one. Now, when I see it’s on her list, I don’t even read it anymore.

I have read 2 at the most, she and I obviously don’t have the same taste in books and I’m a ferocious reader..

Any suggestions for our next book club read? Female teachers ages 20 – 50?

Book clubs?

Author: admin  //  Category: book clubs online

I love to read! I can finish a 500 page book in a day. I recently moved to Arizona, is there a way to find a book club?

Is there such a thing as an online book club?

Let’s start one! I love books too!!!!
What’s your favorite book?
What genre do you like?
lol.
Sorry, I’m a bookaholic.
I practice bookaholicism, meaning I feed my bookaholicness with more books.
I don’t think those are words actually.
I’m going to look up the real words. Hang on…

are there any online book clubs where people can chat about books, post questions, and discuss?

Author: admin  //  Category: book clubs online

Shelfari has that option. It’s a site where you can list all your books for free; you can also post reviews of books that you’ve read and ask questions about them as well. Besides listing all your books you can also join discussion groups based on genres of books and individual books themselves. If you don’t see a discussion group on a book you like then you can create your own. It’s a fun site to join and browse on (you can invite people you know to be your "friends" there and also see who has read the same books that you have). Here’s a link to the site: http://shelfari.com/

Happy reading to you! :-)

How Can I make Book Club more exciting?

Author: admin  //  Category: book club lists

I am a sophomore and i initially just wanted to join book club at my school, but the librarian who was supposed to be in charge sort of handed it to me. And fist of all there is only 4 other people on the list (including myself and 2 of my best friends). The librarian was very excited when we asked her about it because apparently it wasn’t a huge hit last year, i don’t really mind taking care of book club I really enjoy reading, but i was wondering if anyone had any ideas for how i could make it a little more fun.
And if any of y’all have any catchy ideas for us to put on posters that we are going to place around school.
And maybe some of your favorite book suggestions?

First, to up membership, suggest to the head of the English department in your school that members can earn extra credit, maybe by agreeing to read a certain number of books during the school year or by participating in book club activities. Perhaps the teacher can help you with some basic requirements for this.
A lot of current and future movies were based on books. Have some members read the book, see the film (paid for by club membership dues or fundraising) and then host a forum comparing the book to the movie. Should get some girls, if the book was Twilight).
Host a book sale and post notices throughout the school for people to donate any books, comics, DVDs or audio books to the event. Sell everything super cheap as a fundraiser.
Hang posters with popular movies highlighted, saying, "If you liked the movie, you’ll love the book club!"
Picture on a poster the covers of some books like Huckleberry Finn, The Kite Runner, Uncle Bobby’s Wedding, The Chocolate War, Captain Underpants, The Lord of the Flies, Bridge to Terabithia, Goosebumps, with the heading: Among the most banned books in America, read them in Book Club!

Some books I would recommend for the club:
The Chocolate War and I am the Cheese, both by Robert Cormier
(Absolutely brilliantly written young adult novels that you will talk about for days if not months)

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien – a coming major motion picture from the author and cinematic geniuses that brought us The Lord of the Rings

To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee – on everyone’s top ten list of great books, and the award-winning film starring Gregory Peck would be a master stroke as a follow-up.

A Day No Pigs Would Die by Robert Peck – an emotional read that will make even the boys in the club cry. promise.

Killer Angels by Michael Shaara – winner of the Pulitzer Prize and one of the best books ever written about the four-day battle of Gettysburg. The film, Gettysburg, based on the book, is a classic in its own right. For those who ever wondered how so many gave their lives in the course of this war, this book illustrates both the reasons and manner in compelling detail.

Ordinary People by Judith Guest – This powerful book about a teen who blames himself for his brother’s death and flirts with suicide, is one book you will never forget. Follow-up with the film, best picture of the year Oscar winner directed by Robert Redford and starring Timothy Hutton. Unbelievable impact.

Would anyone like to start an online book club?

Author: admin  //  Category: book clubs online

I’ve been looking for an online book group but haven’t had much luck. Would anyone be interested in starting something from scratch?

Ellie. xx
Thanks for the response guys. I’m looking into the wix.com site just now. I wasn’t thinking of anything fancy. Just a forum sort of idea? I was thinking everyone could choose books?

I had a look online for groups earlier. They all have a huge number of members and I was more looking for small group who actually discussed things?
Ok guys, I’ve set up a page. It looks a little shabby at the moment, but I guess it doesn’t matter too much.

Check it out.
Cheers! xxx

it’s pretty basic. you go to wix.com or weebly.com or webs.com and make a webpage. they give you all the starting materials, and it’s absolutely free.

Once you’re finished the webpage, add it in additional details. i’ll check in every few days to see your progress, when the book club’s started i’ll join. i’ve always wanted to be part of a book group too.

my teacher gave us a list of maybe about 40 books or so.
after doing a little searching on the internet,
i narrowed the list down to about 10 that look a bit interesting to me
