In Search of a Book Club/Reading Club?

Author: admin  //  Category: book club lists

I’ve searched Google through and through and cannot seem to find a local or even online book club/reading club that fits my needs. I currently read about a book a week (fantasy genre) and I am looking for locals or anyone with the same interests to talk about their thoughts on those books! I don’t mind reading what other members have suggested either. I would just love to have a constant guide and following as to what to read next and what people thought about that book. Does anyone know a website that had a listing of fantasy genre book clubs or readings?

You should try your local lending library. They tend to be a popular meeting place for book clubs.

book recommendations?

it had been a very long time since i read anything and i was craving a good book, and since i’m a HUGE gilmore girl fan and rory gilmore has awesome taste in books, i decided to pick something off rory’s book club list. i decided i would pick what interested me most off the list and just keep reading books from the list until i’ve read them all. i started with the bell jar by sylvia plath and LOVED IT! i couldn’t put it down. it was so dark and poetic and at times i felt that i related to the main character so much that i too felt crazy! so my question is.. what other books are similar to the bell jar? instead of going down Rory’s list i would like another book like this one, because after i finished it i wanted to pick it up and read through it again.

thanks ahead of time

Looking for a semi-recent novel to discuss with my book club, any suggestions?

Author: admin  //  Category: book club suggestions

I’m part of an informal book club with some friends and next month it will be my turn again to select what novel we’ll read. I’m interested in newer releases (since there will be a lesser chance that one of us has already read it) and something a little different from our past selections. A few of the books we’ve already discussed are:

High Rise by J.G. Ballard
Straight Man by Richard Russo
The Contortionist’s Handbook by Craig Clevenger
Diary by Chuck Palahniuk
Finn: A Novel by Jon Clinch

Since most of us are busy with school, we try to aim for a length of 300 pages or less.

The genre doesn’t matter too much… however, we are not interested in romance, chick-lit, or young adult. If it makes a difference, I’m the only female in the group.

Last but not least, it would be great (but not absolutely necessary) if the book(s) is/are available in the Amazon Kindle store.

Thanks in advance!
Also no POD or self-published works. Thanks!

I suggest "English, August" by Upamanyu Chatterjee. It was recently released (in the past year) in the United States. It is the story of a young Indian trainee civil servant. The posting starts off as a tremendous culture shock for Agastya, a city boy. However, it eventually becomes one long philosophical journey and a process of self discovery.

Agastya Sen’s sense of dislocation is only compounded by his extreme lack of interest in the bizarre ways of government and administration. while his mind is dominated by marijuana, masturbation and the meditations of Marcus Aurelius, images from his previous profoundly urban life…

It is brilliant because the author is himself a civil servant in India. It gives you a wonderful insight onto an unfamiliar world. Let me know what you decide!

Should I continue or stop the Twilight series in my online book club?

We are currently reading Twilight in my online book club, but I am still debating on whether we should continue with the series. What do you think?

Just poll the people in your book club and go with the majority.

I need help picking a book for my book club to read!?

Author: admin  //  Category: book club lists

Hi, I’m 13 years old and a few of my friends and I recently started a book club. We are having a lot of troubling finding a book that we all like, that nobody has read. I would really appriciate it if you could list a book or two(it can be just one, as long as you have all i ask for) that you really liked and fit into the genres of sci-fi, fantasy, fiction, adventure, and historical fiction. We all have rather high reading levels, so any book will do :) . If you please, I would like it if you posted your answer in this format…

Book
Author
Genre
A Few Sentences Explaining What It’s About
Why You Liked It

If you could do it in that format, you have a great chance of getting best answer! Thanks :)

The one book that introduced me to scifi was
Ender’s Game
Orson Scott Card

it is a fun and quick read, also deals deeply into human action and response to a perpetually changing and difficult unknown world.

The Martian Chronicles
Ray Bradbury

this one was wonderful, a short read, it is full of excitement. If you look deeper it will show the cruelty of the human race.

Is there a website that a local book club can set up its schedule and book list online for its members?

Author: admin  //  Category: book clubs online

We want to be able to access our list of upcoming books, dates, times, and maybe even proposed books for future meetings. We are a face-to-face group, not an online book club.

Yahoo groups is your best bet for this, as long as you have at least one person that can run the site.

I am starting a book club. It is three IB high schoolers and the IB English teacher. Books recommendations ?

Author: admin  //  Category: book club lists

If you are not aware of the International baccalaureate English class, it is a pretty rigorous class based on heavy interpretation of literature. Analyzing and studying difference works is a main point.

So when I recommended a book club, two other students as well as the English teacher happily agreed! (We are in our junior year, the three of us) I was wondering if you had any amazing books as recommendations? Ones that are a bit more rare, because keep in mind our English teacher is participating and she surely has an extensive list of books that she has read.

The group will meet outside of school, so feel free to make ANY recommendations. No censorship is going to occur!
Thanks much, and I hope I receive great recommendations!
Ok, I don’t know if I really articulated it well enough, but our English teacher has read many of the ‘classics’, but not ALL. Are there any that are rigorous and in-depth, but not common ( i.e. Crime & Punishment, The Great Gatsby)

Plus the three of us are… a bit precocious, so we would prefer higher level books.
